Last weekend I shot one of my favorite families for their annual photo session.  This year we decided on a new location. We decided on St Louis family photos at the Jewel Box in Forest Park.  The light is always amazing with plants and flowers  always in full bloom.  Rain or shine, warm or cool temperatures this location always works!  We were especially happy because last Saturday the wind was blowing like crazy.  Being indoors with the appearance of being outdoors was exactly what we needed for this photo shoot.St Louis Family Photos

We were all thrilled for this session and had been planning it for months.  Since our last session, their family had grown and I was thrilled to meet their sweet baby girl.  Isn’t she just the cutest?

St Louis Family Photos 02 As you can tell from this photo, she looks just like her beautiful Mamma!  Can you say mini me?  Gush!

St Louis Family Photos 03 Pretty soon even big brother had to get in on the baby love fest.  Don’t toddlers give the best hugs?  I just adore them.

Next came cuddle time with both Mom and Dad.  Again with those amazing toddler hugs that I’m so wild about capturing as part of the family photo session.

St Louis Family Photos 05 St Louis Family Photos 06 Thank you again to the beautiful and loving R Family for letting me be a part of your family for the morning.  It is so fun spending time with your family and document them in a way that fits your style and connection with each other.  I’m already looking forward to what we will do next time!

Tips for a Fabulous Maternity Photo Session

  1. Schedule your session for the right time, this is typically in your seventh or eighth month of pregnancy.  You want your belly to have a nice round shape for the photographs.
  2. Consider using props in your session.  This can be an ultrasound photo, baby blankets, booties or anything else that holds sentimental value to you.
  3. Do you want to include the baby’s father and or other siblings?  Or would you prefer to focus solely on Mom and Baby?
  4. Make sure to discuss what types of photos you are interested in with your photographer.  For example, are you comfortable showing bare belly, or would you prefer to keep your belly covered?  You should also discuss wardrobe selection.  This can be very important to capture the style of photos you are interested in.  Ask your photographer for suggestions.
  5. Moisturize before your session.  Make sure to apply lotion to your knees, elbows and belly before your session.
  6. There are many details to photograph, hands will show in many close up photos.  Consider what type of nail polish will fit the style of photos you wish to capture.
  7. All tight fitting clothing and jewelry should be removed a few hours before your maternity photos.  You don’t want any lines or marks showing on your skin.

This newborn photo session was on location in the customer’s home.  Some clients prefer in home sessions as opposed to coming to the studio.  This can be a relief especially for new parents that are still adjusting to little sleep.  The whole session takes about 3 hours from start to finish.  I bring all the props and materials needed to photograph newborn babies.  From the posing pillow, to the wraps and headbands.  I work with clients to bring a variety of items to match their style.

Mom had warned me that this little angel had not been sleeping very well.  I assured her that eventually all babies do go to sleep and the best thing she could do was relax and we would work through it together.  After I set up the backgrounds and had everything ready to go, she went right to sleep and slept through most of her posed photos.  We had to take a short break to let her eat, and then we moved into the family photos.

Here are some of my favorite photos from our session.  Mom and Dad were feeling a little shy and asked me to only show photos of baby on the blog.  Enjoy!

18 Month Photos taken in the studio with this sweet angel.  She is so full of personality I loved documenting this milestone for Mom & Dad!  We learned that not only does little miss S enjoy pushing the shutter release button on my camera, she also really enjoys stacking the antique suitcases I have for props.  She hung in there with us through several wardrobe changes giving me lots of smiles during the 18 month photo session.  You can see more milestone photos in the baby photography gallery.

Check out this beauty that visited the studio for her 6 month photo shoot.  I’ve been photographing this family for the past several years.  Last fall I traveled to their home to photograph this princess.  During her session we took newborn photos of her on top of her Mom’s wedding dress (swoon).  She did not disappoint for her 6 month milestone session either.  Here are some of my favorite photos from the session.  We captured all the details from her smile to her chubby little legs.  The next time I see her she will be mobile and I will be chasing her with my camera!

Recent extended family photos St. Louis family photographer!  My family recently celebrated our matriarch.  My husband’s Grandmother turned 94 this year and we were fortunate to all be together to celebrate it!  There were 22 of us total together for dinner.  During that time I suggested that after dinner we go out into the back yard and take a family photo together.  What good is having a photographer in the family if we can’t spontaneously take family portraits?

Extended Family Photos St. Louis Family Photographer

My favorite is the hugging and fun shot.  This by far tells the best story of who we are as a family (complete with crying babies)!  We are most definitely a hugging family!

Then of course we had to photograph Gigi (as we all call her) with her two beautiful daughters otherwise known as the crazy ladies!  Can you see the resemblance?

Then all the grandsons (because we don’t have girls in this family).  I love this photo so much, notice Gigi is now drinking from the flask that one of the boys pulled out of his pocket!

We have fun together as a family and these photos are priceless to us.  Having photos of everyone together is wonderful, but having these fun photographs that actually capture who we are as a family are priceless.  I can’t leave out the photo of all of us girls.  We had to marry into the family because as I noted earlier, we don’t do girls in this family (with the exception of little Isabella).

Choosing the Ideal Location for Your Family Photo Session

Location ideas for your next family photoshoot. A Family Photo Session is timeless and if you are looking to update your family portraits or take some for the first time, you might be wondering about what location to use for them.

Family Photo Session

Here are some things to consider before choosing a location:

Comfort

A family photoshoot is where you get to smile, laugh and be yourselves. If some of your family members are shy then you might not want to choose a very public spot.

Personalities

What makes your family unique? Choose a location that fits in with who you are as a family. Do you enjoy spending time in your garden or on a couch reading books? Perhaps you spend lots of time outdoors and on camping trips? Your location should speak to your personalities.

Convenience

Take each member of your family into consideration. What are their ages and needs? If you have two toddlers that might need to use a bathroom at any time, then a remote spot is probably not the best idea.

Family Photoshoot Location Ideas

Below are some ideas of where you could arrange your photo session.

At Home

Sometimes the best shots can be taken right at home. Get your family outside in the garden or setup your living room for a classic look and feel.

In the City

For a more modern feel to your photos you could get out in the city and take a few photos next to an interesting building or in a funky alley way.

In Nature

If you’re looking for a calm, natural setting then choose an outdoor location. Parks and forests make for beautiful backdrops.

In Studio

If you’re looking for a more private setting where you can use props and backdrops, then a studio setting might be more for you. Studio photos will also give you the option to take more posed, structured photos.

Every spring I get so excited when it is time for Edwardsville Easter Mini Sessions!  The children have so much fun being photographed with the live animals. It is always fun day for parents and children in the studio.  Here are some of last year’s Easter Mini Sessions.  This year we were fortunate to have some baby chicks spend the day in the studio.  Not to worry all my animal lovers, they were just visiting from Thomas Acres.  This farm is in Staunton and the chicks are now happily living outside and will be egg layers.  A big thank you to all my wonderful clients that participate in these fun mini sessions each year!

It’s time for my annual St Louis Mother’s Day Mini Sessions! These are absolutely my favorite photo sessions all year. As Mom’s it is so easy to not be in so many photos. This is why I dedicate a full week of photo sessions to Moms and their children.
St Louis Mother's Day Mini Sessions

My Approach to St Louis Mother’s Day Mini Sessions

This session is all about the relationship between Mom and her child(ren).  The majority of the session will be spent playing with and loving each other.  My goal is to keep Mom happy and relaxed.  I’ve found that the best way to keep Mom happy is to make sure the children are happy.  This will be the most fun that have had at any photo session, I promise.  We will start of with a few posed photos, but we will quickly transition into playtime.

During playtime, I will help coach Mom and the children, but it should all feel very natural.  Mom’s are great at loving on their kids, so there is not much directing from me!

Are you looking for more information?  Check out this blog post from earlier in the year on why you need a Mommy and Me Photo Session.

My Personal Mom & Me Session

If you follow me on Facebook you may have seen this post where I highlighted a photo from my own personal Mom & Me photo session.  In case you missed it, here it is!

“The boys and I had A Mom and Me lifestyle session a few weeks ago by the talented Gretchen A Willis.
Although we are not looking at the camera this is one of my most favorite images.
Jack has grown so tall you can see he now walks in stride with me, but still holds my hand because he wants to.
Jace still is happy to be in my arms and always runs his hand through my hair. I fan feel him doing it just looking at this photo and hope I still do 20 years from now.
My message to Mom’s – Get in the frame! Even if you don’t have makeup on or your hair isn’t perfect. Don’t sweat the small stuff and be present in your family’s documented history.”

4 Year Milestone Photo Session

I still can’t believe my baby is 4.  I don’t remember feeling this way when our oldest son turned 4.  It seems that with your first born your look forward to the next new achievement or milestone.  You can’t wait to see what they do next.  When it is your baby, you hold on so tight to each stage.  Even though I know that change is coming regardless, I can’t help but wish I had some way to slow down or stop the clock.  In the week before his 4th birthday, I was able to get him down to the studio to celebrate his 4th birthday.  His 4 year milestone pictures are some of my favorites I’ve taken this month (yes I’m biased).
