It’s time for my annual St Louis Mother’s Day Mini Sessions! These are absolutely my favorite photo sessions all year. As Mom’s it is so easy to not be in so many photos. This is why I dedicate a full week of photo sessions to Moms and their children.
St Louis Mother's Day Mini Sessions

My Approach to St Louis Mother’s Day Mini Sessions

This session is all about the relationship between Mom and her child(ren).  The majority of the session will be spent playing with and loving each other.  My goal is to keep Mom happy and relaxed.  I’ve found that the best way to keep Mom happy is to make sure the children are happy.  This will be the most fun that have had at any photo session, I promise.  We will start of with a few posed photos, but we will quickly transition into playtime.

During playtime, I will help coach Mom and the children, but it should all feel very natural.  Mom’s are great at loving on their kids, so there is not much directing from me!

My Personal Mom & Me Session

If you follow me on Facebook you may have seen this post where I highlighted a photo from my own personal Mom & Me photo session.  In case you missed it, here it is!

“The boys and I had A Mom and Me lifestyle session a few weeks ago by the talented Gretchen A Willis.
Although we are not looking at the camera this is one of my most favorite images.
Jack has grown so tall you can see he now walks in stride with me, but still holds my hand because he wants to.
Jace still is happy to be in my arms and always runs his hand through my hair. I fan feel him doing it just looking at this photo and hope I still do 20 years from now.
My message to Mom’s – Get in the frame! Even if you don’t have makeup on or your hair isn’t perfect. Don’t sweat the small stuff and be present in your family’s documented history.”

4 Year Milestone Photo Session

I still can’t believe my baby is 4.  I don’t remember feeling this way when our oldest son turned 4.  It seems that with your first born your look forward to the next new achievement or milestone.  You can’t wait to see what they do next.  When it is your baby, you hold on so tight to each stage.  Even though I know that change is coming regardless, I can’t help but wish I had some way to slow down or stop the clock.  In the week before his 4th birthday, I was able to get him down to the studio to celebrate his 4th birthday.  His 4 year milestone pictures are some of my favorites I’ve taken this month (yes I’m biased).

Photography Tips & How to Rock Your Photography Session

We’ve all been part of a professional photography session at one time or another.  From school yearbooks to friends’ weddings, we’ve all been in front of a camera at one time or another.  If you’ve ever been unhappy with your photos then this post is for you!  If you are planning a photo session in the near future these tips can help you get better results.

photography session

Your Face

Get to know your face.  This applies to professional photo shoots as well as every day photos.  Take time getting to know your face, how to smile naturally and which side or angle of your face you like better.  Go easy on the makeup.  While an evening out is a different story when it comes to makeup.  If you are having head shots, family or maternity photos taken, go easy on the makeup.  You want basic coverage without overdoing it.  Try to accentuate one part of your face.

How to face the camera.  As a photographer, I will help you when it comes to posing for photos.  In general you shouldn’t be facing the camera head on.  Positioning your body at an angle always makes for better photos.  Think about your chin.  Photos where your neck is elongated and your chin is pushed slightly forward with lift your face and give it a more angular look.  You might want to practice beforehand to get used to it (think selfies).

Clothing Selection

Pick you outfit carefully.  Put some thought into what you’ll wear for your photography session.  Pair bold designs and patterns with solid colors to avoid too much distraction.  You should also pay attention to the fit and shape of your outfit.  Make sure that it compliments you and that you feel comfortable.

Photography is all about light.  Use lighting to your advantage.  This is something that I am an expert at and that is why you hire a professional.  The right light can mean the difference between that wow factor and disappointment.  Avoid standing directly under a light.  Overhead light can create weird shadows on your face.  This is why I often suggest outdoor sessions take place either early in the morning or later in the day.  If by any chance we are shooting in the middle of the day we will look for pockets of shade to avoid this issue.

Last but not least, always remember to have fun and relax.  That is the most important thing I stress to my clients.  Happy families produce happy portraits!

St. Louis Children Photographer – 1 Year Cake Smash

St. Louis Children Photographer – Last week I celebrated a one year milestone with this little cutie!  We first met last year when his parents booked me to capture his newborn portraits.  He was an angel then, and now.  Watching him grow through the past year has been so exciting.  From his sleeping (mostly) newborn photography session, to his playful 3 month photos when he was smiling a cooing at the camera, the 6 month photos when he was sitting up (mostly) and now his one year portraits.

One Year Portraits

Mom brought this adorable banner and matching hat with romper.  He had no trouble smiling for the camera.  Look at that adorable face!

Next we added some balloons to play with.  He got very excited, and thought it was a game!  Again with that killer smile (swoon).

When my children turned one year, I can remember feeling excited that we had made it through the first year (especially as a first time parent).  There was also a sadness that came with the beginning of the toddler phase.  I realized my baby was no longer a baby.  Suddenly there was a mad rush to capture all those small and tiny details.  During milestone photo sessions I always try to capture the small details that are important to Mom and Dad.

Finally, it was time for cake.  Mom & Dad were so excited to watch him dive into his cake and play.  Unfortunately, little man had other ideas.  In the end we were able to get some photos of him with the cake, although not eating it!

We did find that he would eat the icing off his toy car.  So we took what we could get and everyone was thrilled.  Happy Birthday big guy!

Lifestyle Photography Sessions Explained

“I don’t want my photos to look posed”, is a phrase we hear all the time. Enter lifestyle photography.

A lifestyle photography session documents real life milestones, moments and events and gives you images that are anything but posed. Lifestyle photography photos tell your story just as it is at that precise moment and are perfect for any genre of photography. Action driven details bring your images to life over and over again.

So what are some of the situations where lifestyle photography can be used?

Kids Photography

Lifestyle photography is the ideal way to capture the beauty and authenticity of childhood. Make sure your children are well rested and that they’re comfortable in both their clothing and their surroundings. Patience is key during this type of session but this is when the magic happens. Bringing along a favorite snack, toy or book won’t hurt either.

Believe it or not, the most successful photos often happen when we let the kids lead the session. It’s all about making it a magical and spirited time where there is lots to take in. Sitting back and capturing those honest moments will ensure beautiful images that you’ll love for decades.

Lifestyle Photography

Newborn Photography

Lifestyle photography naturally lends itself to newborn photo sessions. True to life, crib and bassinet shots taken through the slats make for stunning photos. Then there are of course the shots with mom, dad, brothers, sisters and even the family pet. Moments that may seem mundane now such as bathing, feeding or even changing a diaper, from a distance of course, make for creative shots that you’ll love for years to come. Playing with and rocking your baby are also moments that you definitely won’t regret taking the time to capture as it gives you fond memories to look back on in the months to come as your baby grows and their routine changes.

Lifestyle Photography

Family Photography

There is nothing quite like having the family together. The laughing, games, meals and memories are truly something to treasure. A lifestyle photography session is the perfect excuse to get your family together and capture different generations spending quality time with each other. Why not shoot a family lunch or time spent playing outside in the garden? Capturing moments between siblings or grandparents and grandchildren are photos you can treasure for years to come.

A Basic Guide to Professional Headshots

Professional headshots are the first introduction to you, your business and your personal brand.

Professional Headshots

Around 93% of HR professionals and recruiters turn to LinkedIn to find quality candidates, 2 in 3 turn to Facebook and more than half utilize Twitter. This just proves that a headshot plays an important role in your professional life. Your professional headshots should be a powerful, compelling and confidence-instilling headshot that makes prospective clients, employers and partners want to reach out and connect with you.

Plan Ahead

Before you head to the studio for your professional headshot photo session, think about the things that you want others to see when they glance at your profile page.

Professional Headshots

Think about some of the characteristics that embody your personal brand. Are you a chef, an educator, a writer? Write down some keywords and phrases. If there are certain props that could help tell your story, bring them along to your session too.

We will usually take a few different shots using various outfits so that you have a good selection to choose from. If you’re going to be using your headshot on a specific social media platform, you might even want to tailor it to fit that site.

Clothing Choices

It’s important that your look matches the image you’re trying to convey.  What you wear on a daily basis is a great place to start. Solid colors are always a good choice, as are tops with strong collars and necklines. We suggest that you wear clothing that compliments your skin and eye tones and it’s best to stay away from very bold colors too. Even though you’ll only be photographed from the shoulders up, it’s important for your entire outfit is professional as you may want a shot or two that is taken further away and incorporates more of your body.

Professional Headshots

Even though this is a more professional shoot, remember to have fun. A relaxed, comfortable subject naturally exudes confidence.

Newborn Photography Studio – Danielle Morhaus Photography

Having a newborn photography studio gives parents a great option for their newborn portraits.  These timeless treasures are created with love, I just love babies.  I pay extra attention to each detail that makes newborns so special.  I have a wide variety of backgrounds, wraps, and props in all sizes and colors to choose from.

newborn photography studio

It’s best to photograph newborns in the first two weeks after their birth.  Doing this gives us the best chance that baby will sleep for their session which allows us to get those perfect sleeping poses.  Plan on being in the studio for 2-3 hours.  This will allow for plenty of time to capture the baby as well as immediate family with the baby (Mom, Dad, Siblings).

With two young children of my own, I understand how much work it can take to get out the door with a new baby.  I have set up my studio to be as comfortable for parents as possible.  Complete with a feeding area, changing station and sofa to relax on.  Just bring the baby, diapers and the milk!

The T Family Newborn Session

For this session we had Mom, Grandma, older sister and newborn baby sister in the studio.  We decided to start with the family and sibling photos because baby was awake and older sister was very excited.  These timeless photos were taken in front of a gray background.  I just love how they pop up against it.

newborn photography studio

Then I photographed just Mom and newborn baby.  I really try to focus on their connection and the bond they are developing.  This will include close up’s and details of how Mom is holding baby.

After we completed all the family photos, it was time to switch to the posed sleeping newborn photos (yay!).  She was an angel and went right to sleep for me.

She was happy on her back or her side, and stayed asleep as I changed the backgrounds, wraps and headbands around.  What an angel!

Don’t forget all the tiny details of that precious baby girl!  Newborn noses, lips, fingers, hands toes and feet, I record them all.  They are only this small for such a short while!newborn photographer

Edwardsville Maternity Photo Session – Tips to Prepare

Bringing a baby into the world is a wonderful life event that should be captured. It’s a time you are going to want to remember and share with your little one once they are a bit older. If you are thinking about or have recently booked an Edwardsville maternity photo session then the below tips should come in handy as your prepare for your session.

Edwardsville Maternity Photo Session

  1. Schedule your session between 31 and 36 weeks.  By this time your tummy should have popped and have a beautiful shape. By booking your maternity session during this time you are also past the discomfort and bloating that happens earlier in the pregnancy.
  2. Moisturizing those knees, elbows and belly are very important. We recommend you do so 1 – 2 hours before the session to avoid any shininess or sticky clothes. You should also avoid wearing any tight fitting watches or bracelets that might leave marks on your skin.
  3. Treat yourself to a neutral or light colored manicure 1 – 2 days prior to your maternity session.  This will make those  shots with your hands on your tummy even more beautiful.
  4. If you already have some cute baby items such as shoes, hats, toys, blankets or onesies, bring them along as they make for adorable props. The same applies to family heirlooms. If you have a special locket or photo that you would like to use, bring it along too.
  5. More and more moms are using their ultrasound photos in their photo sessions. If you aren’t too sure whether you want to use it or not, bring it to the shoot anyway and decide on the day.
  6. Take the time to pick the right outfit for the maternity shoot. You should of course be comfortable but make sure that your clothing doesn’t detract from your tummy’s shape and your natural glow. Avoid large, bold patterns or clothing that is too loose. Empire waists, drawstrings, flowing tops and wrap dresses are perfect for enhancing your shape.

Why You Need a Mommy and Me Photo Session

Be in the Photos

The bond between a mother and a child is unlike any other, one that can be beautifully captured with a camera during a mommy and me photo session. But if you’re anything like me, you’re always the one behind the camera in family photos and hardly ever in them. Even when we have our family photos professionally taken, I’m always too busy worrying about everyone else and don’t get to relax and enjoy the photo session. The photos also tend to focus more on the kids and I hardly ever get to capture moments of us being ourselves.

I’ve recently been reminded that life is truly precious and filled with moments we sometimes take for granted.  I want to be in more photos with my children and this is why I have come to realize how important my Mommy and Me photo sessions are. Now is the perfect time to capture memories with your children, regardless of where you or your kids are in life.

mommy and me photo sessions

Customized for You

We want to make this photo session work for you, so whether you want a few photos with your children, or you simply want some memorable pictures of you and your own mother; we are here to guide you. This is your chance to get creative and really make a photo session about you and your kids and the special bond that you share.

Bring along anything that will make you all feel comfortable and will help you spend some time together as we do our job. For example, you might want to bring a blanket and some of your daughter’s favorite books so that we can capture your snuggles and story time. Maybe you want to stop and grab some ice-treats with your son or bring along a game that you both enjoy playing. This is all about creating a space where you can enjoy being together so that we can perfectly capture these moments for you.

If you are looking for an alternative to the traditional family portraits, the Mommy and Me portraits are ideal. While a family portrait can be a wonderful way to capture those special moments of you and your children through the years, it does require some extra effort to get everyone together and in the same place. A Mommy and Me photo session is easier to style and coordinate.

Intimate Details

I love that Mommy and Me portrait photography is intimate and sweet with very little fuss. These sessions don’t take very long and will free up your schedule to spend more quality time together. These sessions provide a space where those natural interactions and emotions can play out, resulting in a mini time capsule of your current relationship.  You might even want to make this an annual tradition so that you can beautifully document the relationship with your children.
