Christmas Portraits!

As Christmas approaches, our family is spending more time together. There are pageants to go see, movies to watch, breakfasts with Santa & cookies to bake. As I look back at previous years photo’s of all our Christmas time activities I am reminded of how special this time is with young children, as well as how fast the time is going.

So often as a parent I pull out my camera and try to direct my children into the photographs that I want to post on Facebook, use for my Christmas cards, or frame on the wall. These photographs are important, and while they capture my little ones perfectly, they are not freezing the time that is so quickly flying by. How will I look back and remember all these little things we do with our family?

My New Year’s resolution is to try for more lifestyle photography of my own children. Don’t get me wrong, there will still be posed pictures for the mantle, but my goal is capture not just their appearance, but more of who they are and why they are. In other words, I want pictures of them being them, with everyone that they love being with.

What better way to start this new direction with my photography, than by an impromptu photo session at Nana & Papa’s! This session was very relaxed, my boys got to bake cookies with Nana while I circled around in the distance capturing the event. Occasionally I would help to facilitate interaction by suggesting things for them to do (i.e.:give Nana a kiss, or tickle your brother), but the whole idea is to capture who they are without my influence. We also saved time at the end to get a few “family” shots of everyone together.

Nana of course is thrilled, and I believe we have a new Christmas tradition of baking cookies and grandparent pictures every year.
