Newborn Session

What to Expect During Your Newborn Session

Here are some helpful tips and information regarding your newborn session.

newborn session

Timing

It is best to photograph newborns within the first 14 days of their life in order to capture those wonderful sleepy poses.  I am always available to work with older babies, just understand that they may not sleep during their newborn session.  For older babies we will work to get more candid, lifestyle shots of them playing, laughing and exploring the world around them.

When booking, we will pencil in a session based upon your due date, and then tweak it as necessary once the baby is born.  I will check in with you within you as your due date approaches and will rely on you to get in touch with me if something changes to reschedule.

A Newborn session will usually last about 2-3 hours, as the babies need to take frequent breaks for eating and diaper changes.

Posing

You will see based upon my work posted that I like to capture a mix of poses and lifestyle shots of your family together.  Please plan on being in some of the photos, you won’t regret it later!  We want to get plenty pictures of you bonding and snuggling your new baby.

If you have a special prop that you would like included please have it ready.  I will do my best to incorporate them into some of the shots.  Family heirlooms and handmade blankets are perfect for this.  Larger props are more difficult to use, as they can overpower the baby.

I will bring with me blankets, hats, headbands, baskets, or whichever props we decide on when your session is booked.

Temperature

If your newborn session is in your home, please prepare ahead of time by turning down the air conditioner, or turning up the heat.  Newborns tend to fall into a deeper sleep when they are cozy and warm.  This will allow us to get those sweet sleepy photographs!

How to Prep Your Baby

Babies tend to photograph best in simple neutral colored onesies or wraps (I will bring plenty of wraps).  I love tutus and ruffles as much as any other girl, but with a newborn it can overpower those tiny little features we want to capture.  They change so fast!

Plan on changing and feeding your baby just before our session.  A clean bottom and full belly equals a happy, sleepy baby.

Breastfeeding Portraits

If you are interested in breastfeeding portraits, they are available upon request.  These images will remain private for your family to view and share.  This is a very special moment between Mother and Child, and I am honored to document these moments for you.
