Picking a Location – St Louis Family Photographers

Where do most St Louis Family Photographers like to shoot?  Well most professionals can shoot family photographs just about anywhere, but that doesn’t mean you should.  It’s all about identifying the best lighting and using beautiful backgrounds.  When scouting locations for photo shoots I like to keep a few things in mind; first, what type of session will I be shooting and second, what time of day will the session be?

Knowing your Equipment

Knowing which lens to use, and where to use it.  This shouldn’t be much of a surprise, but photographer’s invest thousands of dollars in their gear.  Why do they have so many lenses?  Are they really needed?  A trained photographer will tell you, yes absolutely!  Not to say you cant take really great photos with one lens, that is not the case.  However, I would not use the same lens to photograph a posed newborn baby in the studio as I would a family of 4 in a beautiful park at sunset.  So how do you determine which is appropriate?  You invest time and money in continued education, training, and practice.  When you a hire a professional photographer, it goes beyond someone with a “good” camera.

Documenting a Family

When a family contacts me about booking a family session I start with 2 questions.  Do you have anything in mind?  How old are your children?  Just these simple questions can tell me what I need to know.  For example, if there are young children, most families will need a morning session.  If the kids are older, we can shoot in the evening during golden hour.  Knowing what you have in mind helps me determine what a customer has in mind.  Are they wanting a new photo to hang over the fireplace or use for the Christmas card?  Or maybe Mom just wants to be in more photos playing with her kids (I can completely relate to that!).  Once I know what parents are looking for, we can get to work on finding the best spot for your family photos!
